France’s leading telecommunications company Orange believes the planned liberalisation of the sector in Ethiopia will take shape in 2020.
Ethiopia is one of the last countries whose telecoms industry remains in the hands of the government.

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – Displaced families are enduring subhuman conditions in Ethiopia without enough food and shelter, Jan Egeland, secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, said on Thursday.FILE PHOTO: Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Jan Egeland attends an interview with Reuters at the United Nations European headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland May 10, 2019. Egeland told Reuters he had seen 3,500 people without food in an abandoned factory, sharing 16 overflowing latrines flooded by torrential rains, during a visit to the southern town of Dilla a day earlier.
“These people feel abandoned and I don’t blame them,” the former Norwegian politician and U.N. official said.
There was no immediate comment from the government, which says 2.3 million citizens are displaced inside the country, 1.7 million of them after fleeing conflict.
Ethiopia was last week chosen as hosts of the next World Telecommunication Development Conference, WTDC. The event takes place in 2021 and will be the first time an African country is hosting it.
WTDC is under the auspices of the International Telecommunication Union, ITU. ITU’s 2019 Council meeting in Geneva approved the choice of Ethiopia unanimously according to Getahun Mekuria, Minister of Innovation and Technology, who was in Geneva.
WTDC happens every 4 years, but has never happened in Africa since established in 1994, the Minister added. https://www.africanews.com/2019/06/20/ethiopia-got-historic-global-telecom-summit-in-the-week-it-blocked-internet/
